Facial palsy is a complex medical problem, and every patient requires a comprehensive and individualised approach to care. Often patients and referrers do not know where to turn to for help and it can be hard to coordinate care across GPs, specialists, physiotherapists, radiologists and other practitioners.
Read MoreFacial physiotherapy is a specialist niche area that requires post-graduate training in the anatomy and neurology of facial nerve injuries or disease and their management. Facial physiotherapy addresses both the neurological and non-neurological effects of facial nerve palsy, from a conservative (non-surgical) perspective. This includes, but is not limited to, addressing tightness, hypertonicity, synkinesis, ocular and oral competency and pain management.
A facial physiotherapist will thoroughly understand the concerns of the patient being raised and seek to improve the function and symmetry of the face affected by facial palsy. The therapist will assess the symmetry of static and dynamic expressions of the face and apply contemporary understanding and evidence-based treatments to the rehabilitation facial nerve palsy.
Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose, and Throat Surgery)
The assessment and management of acute facial nerve palsy as well as other facial nerve disorders and related conditions, is a sub-specialty area of Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery. This includes common facial nerve disorders like Bell’s Palsy and Ramsay Hunt Syndrome as well as other conditions such as ear disease, head and neck cancer, and trauma which may cause facial palsy.
In addition, hearing loss which may accompany facial nerve palsy can also be managed.

Read MoreBotox injections
Botox injections are used to selectively weaken muscles and treat targeted areas of synkinesis and hyperkinesis which may result from longer term consequences of incomplete facial nerve healing. Each therapy session is effective for 3-6 months but often the requirement for Botox decreases over time, particularly when combined with effective facial physiotherapy.
Detailed facial analysis
Using questionnaires, photographs, outcome measures, physical examinations, and experienced pattern recognition, we give you a clear picture of what is going on.
Medical imaging
Sometimes, further imaging and other investigations may be necessary either in the acute or chronic stage of facial palsy to help confirm diagnoses or better understand future outcome prediction. Referrals can be organised directly through our clinic for your convenience.
Facial physiotherapy
Keegan will identify opportunities for specialised neuro physio to manage hypertonia, synkinesis and improving facial contour and animation.
Surgical opinion
The surgical approach to reconstruction after facial palsy is tailored to each individual patient. Surgery for facial palsy is a significant decision and The Facial Palsy Specialists clinic will allow you multiple opportunities to discuss your options and ask questions about your procedure.
